Engagements & Couples

Engagement photos with your wedding photographer are an essential step before the big day. They help establish a comfortable connection between you and the photographer, allowing you to become familiar with their style and approach! This session also provides an opportunity to capture your unique love story in a relaxed setting, ensuring genuine expressions and moments. Ultimately, engagement photos set the tone for your wedding photography, creating anticipation and confidence that your special day will be beautifully documented.

Maybe you’re here because you have booked your engagement session? Things are moving along and getting that much closer to your wedding day! I wanted to put together some tips to make sure your photos are as good as they can be. Below are some tips to help with that. If you need help deciding on an outfit even after reading over this and going through all of our recourses, I can help! I am here to make you look good and if we just shrug a shoulder at what you’re wearing, then I’m not doing my job! I love to work with couples to make sure their photos are great. I tried to simplify everything as much as possible but if any questions come up, just ask!

Generally, we will start about 2 hours before sunset. The lighting is always best around this time! The first half an hour or so it designated to some warm up shots. We will start with basic shots of just smiling facing the camera and location spotting during this time. It’s best to start with your more casual outfit during this time. At about the one hour marker, once we’ve fallen into a comfortable groove, I’ll have you change outfits. Then we will just hang out and explore our location! I love to give guidance, but mainly just let you two have a great time while I capture your time together!

Outfit Tips

Hey, these suggestions aren’t mandatory, but they’re designed to help inspire you in navigating your photo planning process.

Bring multiple outfits – Most couples choose two outfits: one casual that reflects your everyday selves and personalities, and one dressier option for a more formal, polished look.

Coordinate instead of matching – Avoid matching outfits, as this often results in overly staged and unnatural photos. Be mindful of patterns as well—too many can distract from the main focus, which is you.

Match formality levels – If the bride is wearing a formal gown and styled hair, the groom should avoid casual items like tshirts or hats.

Incorporate personal interests – If you share a favorite sports team, consider bringing jerseys, balls, or other memorabilia to add a meaningful touch to your photos.

Choose flattering colors and styles – Wear outfits that complement your skin tone and body shape, enhancing your confidence in front of the camera.

Include your pets – We love involving your fur babies! If you bring them, please bring treats, a leash, and someone to help manage them so we can focus on capturing your connection.

Use Pinterest for inspiration – Don’t hesitate to browse Pinterest for photo ideas; it’s a fantastic resource for creative inspiration.

Location Tips

One of the most common questions I get from couples planning engagement photos is: WHERE should we shoot? The honest answer is… anywhere that truly represents you. Engagement photos should capture the unique connection between you as individuals and as a couple. I’ve made this list of ideas to help you choose a meaningful location. Each spot will resonate differently with every couple, so take some time to reflect!

At your proposal site – Add special significance by recreating or celebrating the place where you said "yes!"

A location you both love and visit often – Whether it’s your favorite coffee shop, a beloved lake, or a park that’s part of your routine, these places tell your story.

Where you had your first date – First date spots hold cherished memories and make for heartfelt photos.

Seasonal settings – If your story includes the holiday season, consider an engagement session surrounded by festive decorations, twinkling lights, or even snow for a magical touch.

Still can’t decide? – Let me know. I have shot at literally hundreds of locations and I’m sure that we can narrow down some spots that match the vibe you are hoping for.

The key is to make your photo session uniquely yours. If you’re still unsure about where to shoot, I’m here to help. I know plenty of beautiful locations around Northeast Ohio and would love to chat and find the perfect spot that fits your vision. Don’t hesitate to reach out!
